The House Republicans finally came around to electing a new Speaker, Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana. Johnson said he’d like the House to pass the farm bill in December, “await Senate action” and then “begin negotiations (with the Senate) as soon as possible.”  Senate Ag Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow has maintained that the Senate will bring up the farm bill in early 2024.  The House now has 21 days before the stopgap funding runs out. They must either pass the eight remaining appropriations bills (out of 12) – and get consensus with the Senate by the deadline – or pass another continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government open.
