Hogs and Pigs Report USDA released this quarterly report last Friday, which was previewed here the previous day (see Ag Perspectives, 21 December). The total inventory of hogs and pigs as of 1 December was 73.2 million head, 102 percent of 2016 but slightly smaller than the record 73.549 million head as of 1 September. Also included in the report were the following numbers: • Pig crop: 33.4 million head (103 percent of last year) • Pigs saved per litter: 10.74 • Market hogs: 67.1 million head (102 percent of last year) The above results were reasonably within market expectations.
