Russian Grain Markets: 22 – 26 May 2023 Russian farmers continue their spring planting campaign. The Minister of Agriculture reports that around 33.2 Mha have been planted out of the 57 Mha scheduled. Also, 93 percent of winter crops are in good condition but in certain areas winter crops are being replanted. The forecast for this year’s crop is 123 MMT of which 78 MMT is wheat. President Putin visited Crimea in mid-May and reported that Russia is showing good export dynamics for agricultural commodities during this season. According to Putin, last year Russia proved that it is 110.2 percent self-sufficient in agricultural commodities and produced a record crop of almost 158 MMT. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants.
