China announced this morning a list of 696 U.S. products for which importers may apply for a tariff exemption. Importers must apply for the exemption by 2 March, with a particular volume of imports specified in the application. Import volumes above the applied for amount will be subject to the existing retaliatory tariffs. There is a 10 percent buffer on the applied for volumes. For a matter of scope, the 696 products are less than 14 percent of the 5,078 products targeted by China’s tariffs. However, today’s announcement also references products not on the list.
