USDA’s Cold Storage report for July showed the volume of beef and pork continuing to decline. There is a natural seasonal decline as the summer barbeque season spikes demand, but there is also a decline year-over-year. Pork and beef production are rebounding and could restock freezers, but efficiency suggests that carrying excess stock is an expense that should tighten with improved market information. The beef processing margin is down 28 percent year-on-year.
