In the most recent NASS Crop Progress report, soybean crop condition ratings rose slightly during the week ending 22 July. Those in the reporting states rated excellent increased to 18 percent from 16 percent the previous week, bringing the share in the good and excellent categories up to 70 percent from 69 percent the week prior. Despite declining from an early season high of 75, those combined categories remain near the upper end of the five-year range and well above the five-year average rating. On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
