Cutting Food Waste USDA issued a national strategy yesterday that aims to cut food waste by 50 percent by 2030. According to the agency, food waste in the U.S. involves a third of the supply. There are many reasons why this is concerning and USDA has proposed many remediation steps along the supply chain. One concept is that food is also energy. It converts to harmful methane in municipal solid waste dumps, or it can be captured as energy on the farm, or as compost at the household level. WPI’s team was retained by the governing board of a U.S. industry organization to review a decision, reached by vote, to invest significant assets into the development and management of an export trading company. WPI’s team conducted a formal review of this decision and concluded that the current level of market saturation would limit the benefits of the investment. Based on WPI’s analysis and recommended actions, the board subsequently reversed its decision and undertook a strategic planning effort to identify more impactful investments.
