The U.S. Energy information Administration (EIA) today released the May Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), which maintains its estimate of ethanol use in 2019 at 14.53 billion gallons but trims the forecast for 2020 about 0.4 percent to 14.55 billion gallons (949,000 barrels/day). On a marketing year basis, the ethanol supply shows a slight drop in production in MY 2018/19 and a net wash in consumption. We’re now in Q3, and both consumption and production will start to inch upward into the summer driving season. The EPA’s approval of year-round E15 use by 1 June could add an ever-so-slight boost if that new expected regulation doesn’t get caught up in legal challenges.
