Both the House and Senate Agriculture Committees are taking the next step in the farm bill process when they markup farm bills next week. But then again, the Committees marked up farm bills last year. There are other signs, however, that point to this time around being the real deal. First, House Majority Leader Representative Eric Cantor (R-Virginia), who kept the farm bill from coming to the House floor in 2012, has now said that the House will take up the farm bill this summer. On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants.
