Higher Cotton Production Expected; Prices Slowly Moving Up: The Cotton Advisory Board (CAB)’s estimate of India’s 2017/18 cotton production is 37.7 million bales (170 kg each), up 9.27 percent from 34.5 million bales in 2016/17.It is projected to be down in states that include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh while higher in Rajasthan and Punjab. Pest attacks, especially pink ballworm, are expected to cause the production drop in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The overall area under cotton in 2017 was 12.2 mill hac, up 12.96 percent from last year’s 10.8 mill hac. Meanwhile, domestic consumption in India is expected at 28.8 million bales.
