In a decision released today, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) upheld California’s Proposition 12 which imposed minimum space requirements for livestock and poultry production. For pork, the requirement was that meat will be required to come from animals farrowed from sows who had a minimum of 24 square feet in pens and the ability to “turn around freely.” Prop 12 was passed as a referendum in 2018 and has been subject to delays in regulatory implementation on California’s end, plus several legal challenges – all unsuccessful to date. Weighing in on strategic realignment
WPI’s team was retained by the governing board of a U.S. industry organization to review a decision, reached by vote, to invest significant assets into the development and management of an export trading company. WPI’s team conducted a formal review of this decision and concluded that the current level of market saturation would limit the benefits of the investment. Based on WPI’s analysis and recommended actions, the board subsequently reversed its decision and undertook a strategic planning effort to identify more impactful investments.
