General Comments Traders apparently were impressed today by the big green blobs that were shown by weather radar. The green blobs indicate where precipitation is falling, but give no indication of the amount of precipitation. The green covered much of the Midwest in spotty fashion. However, the heaviest rains fell in a relatively narrow area running from northeast Iowa into southern Wisconsin. Rainfall totals in this band ranged up to an inch or slightly more in some cases. On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
