Statistics Canada released its initial estimates, which are based on surveys conducted last month, of planted area for 2019. Much like the U.S., they show a decline in oilseed plantings and an increase for grains. With the de facto Chinese embargo on Canadian canola weighing heavily on prices, canola plantings were estimated at 21.314 million acres, a 7 percent drop from 22.813 million acres last year. The soybean area was estimated at 5.65 million acres, down 11 percent from 6.32 million acres. Corn and oat acreage were both slightly higher.
