Overnight trading pushed corn and soybean prices mildly lower with more pronounced weakness in wheat. Good weather, high weekly crop condition ratings and expectations that USDA’s July WASDE (to be released Thursday) will be bearish discouraged buyers and kept pressure on futures prices. Trading volumes were average at best. The day session saw wheat futures prices sink further and corn losses accelerate. However, soybean prices were hanging on slightly above unchanged, helped by a good rally in soymeal. The latter prices were up about $5.00 around mid-session but then slid back to finish up $2.10-2.60. Soyoil closed higher as well, up 12-16 points. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
