The quietude of yesterday’s grain and soy futures markets continued in the overnight trading session. Volume and price movement were limited with nothing significant to inject trading interest or volume into the markets, and prices stayed close to Wednesday’s closes. At this morning’s recess, corn was fractionally higher, wheat was down 1-2 cents, and soybeans were off more than 3 cents. The day session started quietly as well, but prices began to move more aggressively. Corn futures extended their minor overnight gains, closing up 2.75-4 cents and not far from session highs. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
