Activists in Europe delivered more than the 1 million signatures required under the European Citizens’ Initiative to compel action on their demand to completely ban glyphosate. However, their petition involves an even bolder change than just banning a singular chemical: “We call on the European Commission to propose to member states a ban on glyphosate, to reform the pesticide approval procedure, and to set EU-wide mandatory reduction targets for pesticide use.” More than half (663,867) of the signatories are from Germany, home to two of the world’s five largest agrochemical companies and representing 41 percent of their market capitalization.
