U.S. Vegoil Trade Deficit Continues to Grow The U.S. is the world's largest oilseed producer. It is now the world's second-largest oilseed processor after China and the third-largest net importer of vegoils after China and India.USDA's January forecasts for 2011/12 call for the U.S. to export only 0.917 MMT of vegoils, import 3.757 MMT and have a net vegoil trade deficit of 2.84 MMT. That's up from 2.23 MMT in 2010/11 and only 80,000 MT a decade ago. The USDA estimates do not include corn oil, but do include coconut oil, cottonseed oil, olive oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, peanut oil, rapeseed oil, soyoil and sunflower oil. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
