Paraguay Rejects DET The lower house of Paraguay's Congress yesterday voted down a proposal to impose a 10 percent export tax on unprocessed soybeans. The proposal was promoted as a way to support the small soybean processing sector by encouraging the exports of soymeal and soyoil. However, the measure was defeated by opponents who said it would hurt Paraguay's farmers and benefit multinational companies that have built soybean crushing plants in the country. On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
