Cockleburs a Problem for U.S. Soybean Shipments to Pakistan While in Karachi this past weekend to speak at the third Pakistan Edible Oils Conference, it was apparent that Pakistan is experiencing rapid growth in demand for vegetable oils and soymeal. This has resulted in the construction of new soybean processing plants and major increases in soybean imports to produce a supply to meet that demand. USDA has forecast Pakistan’s 2017/18 soybean imports at 2 MMT, up from only 11,000 MT in 2013/14 and 1.69 MMT in 2016/17. A problem has arisen, however, for U.S. soybean exports to that country. WPI’s team was retained by the governing board of a U.S. industry organization to review a decision, reached by vote, to invest significant assets into the development and management of an export trading company. WPI’s team conducted a formal review of this decision and concluded that the current level of market saturation would limit the benefits of the investment. Based on WPI’s analysis and recommended actions, the board subsequently reversed its decision and undertook a strategic planning effort to identify more impactful investments. On behalf of numerous clients, WPI has not only assisted in identifying strategic paths but also advised their implementation.
