Real WTO Problem The President’s 2021 Trade Agenda and 2020 Annual Report highlights the trade protectionism in India and efforts to change New Delhi’s policies. One area of criticism is “Make in India” campaign but that is not such a unique policy. Many countries are now trying to shorten supply chains by bringing production back home. The U.S. has Made in America, Japan subsidizes companies to move out of China, China’s five-year plan calls for more self-reliance, Europe’s pursuit of “sovereignty” is filled with self-supply overtones, etc. The larger crisis at the WTO is not the broken appellant body since countries can retaliate their way back into a balance of concessions.
