The North American summer growing season can be considered “officially” underway with the long Memorial Day weekend. The northern half of the country didn’t have much of a spring season as it shifted from winter to summer virtually overnight, and the month of May will go down as one of the warmest on record across the northern Plains and western Canada. Rainfall in most of this region has also been well below normal. That drier trend started last fall and continues today. Subsoil moisture remains short across a very wide area, and it will take frequent, well-timed rains to keep the string of great yields intact.
