A bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives that would require the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) to add sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to the agency’s monthly published data to provide a benchmark on how the fuel is developing. Recall, the Biden Administration has made a goal of 3 billion gallons of SAF by 2030 – which is five and half years away. Currently, EIA reports SAF in its “other biofuels” data set. The other biofuels category includes renewable heating oil and renewable naphtha and gasoline. However, EPA has data on RINs generation by fuel type which provides a good benchmark of production.
