Two important factors that have limited U.S. wheat exports in 2014/15 have been large wheat supplies held by competing origins and the effect of the historically strong U.S. dollar.Today's weekly export sales report from USDA/FAS for the week ending 26 February shows net wheat sales for 2014/15 of 469,600 MT (17.3 million bushels). This brings total export commitments (shipments plus open sales) for 2014/15 to 21.809 MMT (801.3 million bushels). That is 89 percent of the total U.S. wheat export volume of 900 million bushels (24.5 MMT) projected by USDA for 2014/15, which is a meager goal and over 3 MMT less than the average of the last five years. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants.
