This past Friday (20 September), we followed the interpretation of most by adding: 1) The cancellation of U.S. farm visits by Chinese officials, plus 2) President Trump saying that he wants a complete trade deal with China, not just agricultural commodity buying, and he doesn’t need the deal to occur before next year’s election, to conclude that bilateral trade talks were not going well. It is still unclear why the farm tour was cancelled, but officials on both sides are saying the talks were “productive.” The goal is for the two sides to meet again in October. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
