Wheat Argentina’s wheat crop is suffering from a cold, dry winter. Many areas have not received meaningful rains since June and the crop is suffering. Presently, more than 60 percent of the planted area has soil moisture levels rated as fair/dry and 36 percent of the wheat crop is rated fair/bad (an increase of 10 percent from the prior week). The Cordoba province, which provides about 20 percent of Argentina’s total crop, is the most affected and many hectares are lost already. Santa Fe is in a similar situation. The Buenos Aires province, however, which accounts for 40 percent of the wheat crop, is developing with good conditions and sufficient soil moisture. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
