Production is expected to total about 14 MMT in 2019, which will enable the country to remain self-sufficient into 2020. As recently as 2014, it had to import up to 35 percent of its wheat consumption. The government has purchased about 1.2 MMT from farmers so far in the crop year. Iran says that some of the wheat crop improvement is attributable to use of the Participatory Varietal Selection system that matches seed stock with growing condition. WPI’s team was retained by the governing board of a U.S. industry organization to review a decision, reached by vote, to invest significant assets into the development and management of an export trading company. WPI’s team conducted a formal review of this decision and concluded that the current level of market saturation would limit the benefits of the investment. Based on WPI’s analysis and recommended actions, the board subsequently reversed its decision and undertook a strategic planning effort to identify more impactful investments.
