This announcement was made during the Eid Al-Fitr holidays to avoid any organized protests, and it follows other recent price increases for water (45 percent), electricity (26 percent) and Cairo subway fares (250 percent). The gasoline price hike will be very difficult for the farming sector as well as grain transportation. Diesel fuel prices were not raised, however, which should mean that most major trucking will not be affected (at least not yet). On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
