Regional Updates MEDITERRANEAN/MIDDLE EAST/NORTH AFRICA Turkey has stopped the import tax on wheat (45 percent), barley (35 percent), and corn (25 percent) until 31 December due to the lower local production this year. The import tax of 19.3 percent on sorghum was also stopped. Turkey’s crops suffered very badly from a shortage of rainfall and very high temperatures - this has limited local supplies and led to rapidly increasing prices. Saudi Arabia’s poultry industry will continue to expand in 2022, based on the latest estimates by the USDA-FAS. Local production will reach 940,000 MT with chicken meat imports at 540,000 MT. Forecasting developments in production agriculture
On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development. WPI’s methodology included a series of interviews with regional grain elevators and seed consultants. Emphasizing outreach and communication with stakeholders who possess intimate sectoral knowledge – on-the-ground insights – is a regular component of WPI’s methodologies, made possible by WPI’s ever-growing network of industry contacts.
