With that said, the drought-reduced southern Plains crop appears to be one of the best quality ones in a long time. Following two years of low protein and poor milling quality production, the 2018 crop is a clear winner. Test weights and protein content are high, and thousand-kernel counts are very high. On behalf of a private U.S. agricultural technology provider, WPI’s team generated an econometric model to forecast the movement of concentrated corn production north and west from the traditional U.S. Corn Belt. WPI’s model has subsequently provided quantitative support to a multi-million-dollar investment into short-season corn variety development.
