Preliminary negotiations on a new free trade agreement (FTA) between the U.S. and Japan commenced today. Since the U.S. withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in 2017, Japan has entered into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) as well as the EU-Japan Economic Policy Agreement (EPA), putting U.S. commodity exports to that country at a tariff disadvantage. U.S. ag groups are urging the Trump administration to at least ensure a level playing field with the CPTPP and EPA.
